High-throughput multimedia platforms increasingly operate under constraints that are simultaneously statistical, computational, and infrastructural: inputs are high-dimensional and heterogeneous, queries arrive with bursty temporal structure, storage and memory bandwidth are finite, and latency budgets are tight. In this setting, compressed representation learning aims to replace raw feature tensors and heavyweight embeddings with compact codes that preserve retrieval-relevant semantics while enabling efficient indexing and search. This paper studies compressed representation learning as an end-to-end design problem that couples learned encoders, quantizers, and indexing structures with data-intensive system primitives such as batching, caching, replication, and streaming ingestion. We formalize the objective as a constrained optimization that trades off retrieval fidelity, code rate, and serving cost, and we analyze how design choices propagate from training-time losses to deployment-time throughput and tail latency. The discussion integrates learned vector quantization, entropy-constrained coding, and distillation into discrete codebooks, and connects these methods to approximate nearest neighbor search via asymmetric distance computation and compressed-domain similarity estimation. We further examine system-level considerations including sharded indices, multi-tier storage, GPU-assisted re-ranking, and online updates under concept drift. The result is a technical framework for constructing multimedia indexing pipelines that are robust to scale, adaptable to changing distributions, and efficient under stringent resource constraints.
